Blocks are open ended learning materials that children can use in simple and complex ways.
Blocks are unique because they do not have a prescribed way to fit together as compared to Lego or Tinkertoys. Block play requires ample building time, so long uninterrupted periods of play are necessary.
The purpose of the Block Center is to:
develop large muscle control
provide opportunities for classification
provide opportunities for cooperative and imaginative play
provide opportunities for talking, learning and using new vocabulary
offer children a three-dimensional medium to represent their ideas
facilitate problem solving
offer many mathematics and science learning outcomes
