Southwest Horizon School Division believes that it is our responsibility to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action. In order to move forward into a better future for all, we must use the Calls to Action as a starting point towards reconciliation. Specifically, the TRC calls different levels of government to:
Share information and best practices on teaching curriculum related to residential schools and Aboriginal history
Build student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect
Identify teacher-training needs relating to the above
With respect to the above calls to action, we believe that learning is the first step on the path toward reconciliation, and this can begin at the school and divisional level. Teachers in our division have access to a part time coordinator who can help in planning for incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the classroom. This coordinator also helps implement division-wide initiatives that will help build student capacity for understanding, empathy, and respect of Indigenous cultures.
In addition to classroom-based learning, we encourage you to look through the resources on the left-hand side of this page, which include videos, print materials, and other resources appropriate for teachers, students, families, and community members.
As with all learning, we don’t expect to follow a linear path in our journey towards reconciliation; rather, we will begin by acknowledging that we can always do better, and that’s where we are going to start.
