Social Justice Day 2018

On April 4, Hartney and Wawanesa Schools hosted a Senior Social Justice Day for Grades 9 through 12 students. It was planned by Teachers Marley Dewar, Tracey Salamondra, and Kirby Stone and funded by grants received from the Manitoba Teachers Society.


Lenard Monkman was the keynote speaker.  He spoke about issues facing indigenous peoples today.  There were three breakout sessions.  Joy Smith from the Joy Smith Foundation, a former teacher of 23 years, former MLA and MP came to speak about Human Trafficking.  There was also the Blanket Exercise, and SERC come out to speak about Identity. The day went very well.


That evening Joy Smith hosted a Human Trafficking session for parents and community members.  The foundation’s mission statement is: The Joy Smith Foundation works to ensure that every Canadian man, woman and child is safe from manipulation, force, or abuse of power designed to lure and exploit them into the sex trade or forced labour.  Further information and resources can be found on their website at www.joysmithfoundation.com
