NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
JUST A REMINDER!
When a School Bus is stopped and the lights are flashing ñ you cannot pass the bus.  This infraction will result in an automatic fine.  Plus, you may injure a student who is getting off the bus.  As Bus Safety Week quickly approaches us ñ ìPlease Be Safe.î

October 26th is Picture Retake Day.  We will be taking class and individual pictures for Mrs. Puhachís Kindergarten room and any other retakes that are needed.

Student Fees
Student fees were due by the end of September.  We realize it is an expensive time of year and we want you to know that fees can be paid in installments.  We have implemented a new policy this year where students will be exempt from extra curricular activities and field trips until partial payment and arrangement for full payment has been made.  A letter to remind parents who have not yet paid their fees will be sent out shortly.

Please, if your son/daughter is ill, please keep them at home.  With the threat of H1N1 it is very important that ill students not be in class.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Western Manitoba Youth Choir
Will perform at Souris School
October 17, 2009 ñ 7:30 p.m.
$5.00 for adults
$1.00 for students
Children under 5 free

We are still looking for billets for 18 choir members on the evening of October 17th.  If you are able to billet a choir member, please contact Louise Lawson at 483-2693 or Souris School at 483-2161 and dial 0.

If you have a school or community event, please email to sourisevents@gmail.com.  This will automatically get it on the Community calendar at the Town of Souris website.  This is a great opportunity to get your event advertised.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me directly at 483-6230. Have a great Thanksgiving weekend and we will see you on Tuesday.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
The books are out for this year's Battle of the Books!  Students from grades 3 to 6 can participate by reading 6 to 10 books from a given list.  This year's competition will be at our Community Hall.  On April 7th, the grade 3 and 4 classes from around the Division will compete.  On April 8th, it will be the grade 5 and 6 classes.  Copies of the books are available in the classrooms, in the school library, and at the town library.

Does anyone have any Jello Jiggler letters that they do not need?  Grade 5 classes can use them for an art project.

Also, does anyone have any magnetic darts?  We use ours for indoor recess, but ours have gone missing.  Thanks for your help.
        ïMrs. Carol Turner

TERRY FOX RUN
Souris School had another successful Terry Fox run this year.  The weather was unusually hot for late September, but students and staff ran for a great cause.  Students and staff were successful in raising $4,874.50 for the Terry Fox Foundation and the fight against cancer.  The individual student who raised the most this year was Grant Jackson.  Grant raised $167.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation.  Grant received a Terry Fox t-shirt for his efforts.  Excellent work Grant!  Honorable mentions go to Jessie Robbins $130.00 and Dustin Driedger who raised $120.00.  Thanks to all who participated and we're looking forward to another successful campaign in 2010.
        ïMr. Brian Yon

COATS FOR KIDS

CHOIR CLUB
Itís that time of year when the School Choir Club starts again.  This group is for any Grade 3, 4 and 5 boys and girls who love to sing and be part of a special group.  It is open to anyone, no audition required.  The first practise will be on Thursday, October 15th at 12:15 ñ 12:40 p.m..  Our first singing engagement will be at our School Remembrance Day Service.  I encourage any students in Grade 3, 4, & 5 to come out on October 15th to see what Choir Club is all about.  An information letter has been sent home today.
        ïMrs. Glenda McConnell

SICK CHILDREN
Notes to stay in at recess do not help a sick child to have a good and productive day.  If a child is ill, we would recommend that they remain at home where they can receive the proper care, and where they will not spread their illness to others.  Most times, if a child is too sick to go out for recess, they are too sick to be in school.  This has always been an important issue, but with the threat of H1N1 virus it is even more so.

MIDDLE YEARS NEWS

Middle Yearís Drama
The Middle Years Drama Club is proud to present  ì Way Out West in a Dress î a western comedy. You'll "dye" laughing at this wild western musical full of dynamic dialogue, double identities, criminal plots and a music score as wild as the Old West! With over 50 Souris Middle Years students involved in the production, you are sure to enjoy the performance. Two performance dates are set - Thurs. Oct. 29th and Fri. Oct. 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the Souris School gym.  Tickets will be available at the door, or if you want to pick some up early, stop by the school office.   Come out and enjoy the show!

CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS
The Canadian Medical Hall of Fameís Discovery Day will be held at the University of Manitoba on Friday, November 6th.  This is an unparalleled introduction to career options within medicine and the other health sciences.  There is limited space for Grade 12 students and if you are interested, please see me for further information.

Yesterdayís ACC Counsellorís Day has provided us with the following information. If anyone is interested in attending ACC in the fall of 2010, it would be best to register as soon as possible.  There are programs with waiting lists.  Certain programs have been upgraded and expanded. Check out their improved scholarships, awards and bursaries web page.  The new 2010 Viewbook has been released and we have copies.  As well, their ìSpend a Day Programî is up and running again.  It is available to students from Grade 9 to 12.
The Grade 12 Grad interviews are continuing.  Advanced Early Admissions Deadlines for Universities are fast approaching.  It never hurts to apply to more than one school, especially when you are unsure of where you want to attend.   At this point, all Grade 12ís should be actively searching scholarship web sites, checking our scholarship board and applying for scholarships.  Please see me for further information.

~It was discussed at the September meeting, whether or not parents would be interested in ordering school t-shirts or hoodies for their child. The idea is, to give all students the opportunity to show their school spirit by wearing a T-shirt/hoody when attending pep rallies, school events, or as a fan cheering in the stands. ~~For that matter, parents are their childís biggest fans, and the T-shirt/hoodies come in adult sizes too! If this is something that you would be interested in please let either your room rep or one of the executive members know and we will put together the information and send an order form home later in October.
