NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

Middle Years Drama
Congratulations to all the actors and production crew for an excellent performance of ìWay Out West In A Dressî last night.  The audience was in tears with laughter and enjoyed every minute.  It is great to see the huge amount of talent that we have at Souris School.  A job well done!  If you missed the performance last night, make sure you attend this evening at 7:00 p.m.   Tickets are available at the door.   You will be sorry if you miss it!

As another month comes to an end, please make sure that you have your calendar marked for November Student/Parent/Guardian Conferences that will take place November 25th and 26th.  These are very important conferences for all students from K-12.  Report cards will be coming home on November 18th.  This will give you the first look at how your son/daughter is doing at their present grade level.

Souris School Remembrance Day Service will be held on Tuesday, November 10th at 2î30 in the Main Gym.

Souris School Community Report 2008-2009
Souris Schoolís main goal for the 2008-2009 school year was in completing our goal of ìAssessmentî.  We have had, over the past three years, the goal of achieving an ìAssessment Documentî that reflects student learning from the document titled ìRethinking Classroom Assessmentî.

The following four points were the criteria that we used to complete this new document.

1.  Educate staff on the key parts of assessment.

2.  Implement formative assessment to maximize student learning and motivation.

3.  Link assessment to the planning of student learning outcomes.

4.  To develop strategies to communicate student learning outcomes for students/parents.

We reached our goal of creating a new reporting structure for students, and as well, we have developed a series of strategies of the Engaged Learner documents to achieve these goals of reporting student learning.

Does the picture really look different than it did four years ago?  We really believe that the new format reflects the research and theories of student learning.  We look forward to comments from students and parents of these new documents.

If you require further information on this report, please contact me at Souris School.

Important Notice
Souris School is ìnotî doing fund raising for a computer for a blind child.  If you receive a call about this asking for your credit card number, please call your local RCMP detachment and report this incident.

Please, if your son/daughter is ill, please keep them at home.  With the threat of H1N1 it is very important that ill students not be in class.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me directly at 483-6230. Have a great weekend and we will see you on Monday.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Our school will again be taking part in Operation Christmas Child.  Families or groups may fill shoeboxes with items for needy children in Mexico and Central America.  If you would prefer to give one or two items, we will gladly make up the boxes here at school.  You may wish to give $7.00 to aid in shipping the boxes overseas.  Last year, our community sent about 200 boxes.  Items to include are:
small, new toys, school supplies, hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, and soap; hard, wrapped candy, sunglasses, T-shirts, ball caps, hair clips, socks.
Your box may be marked Girl or Boy, and may be for a 2-4 year old, a  5-9 year old, or a 10-14 year old.

Please do not include any war toys, liquids, playing cards, used items, or anything that will melt in tropical heat.

Contributions are to be at the school by November 18th.  Thank you for your help in bringing joy and hope to very needy children.

HOMESTAY FAMILIES NEEDED
In October of 2008, the five school divisions in Southwestern Manitoba: Beautiful Plains, Fort la Bosse, Rolling River, Southwest Horizon and Turtle Mountain, formed a consortium to bring international students to our area.  Over the past 12 months, we have worked to build a program and recruit students.  The program is moving forward and we are getting many inquires about studying at our schools.

A very important piece to our program is homestay families.  We are now actively seeking families to open their homes to students from other countries.  Over the summer, our office has had many inquires from families requesting information.  We would like to encourage anyone interested in becoming a homestay family to please apply now.  Visit www.studymanitoba  to find out more about homestay family guidelines.  You can apply to host a student for one or two semesters.  You may apply online.  Once registered, you will need to provide the following:
  • Criminal Record Checks for family members over the age of 18, living at home
  • Child Abuse Registry Checks for family members over the age of 18, living at home
  • 2 Letters of recommendation
 ï Home site visit
We will be placing students with eligible homestay families in the next 4-12 months.  The only limit we have to our International Student Program is the number of families we have to place students with.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office:

Acoustic Panel Project
When the gym renovation was completed about five years ago, there was never a replacement of acoustic panels put on the walls.  This has resulted in a facility for school & community performances, presentations and events very loud and echoey (bare cinder block walls and metal ceiling) making it very difficult for any audience to hear properly.

Some research has been done and an acoustic specialist came in to analyze and assess the need for proper acoustic considerations.  The reverberation rate calculated out to be 5.29 seconds.  The acceptable range is 1.20 ñ 1.75 seconds.  Last June he quoted a cost of about $10,000 - $12,000 to bring the facility up to an acceptable standard.  This company from Winnipeg has installed these acoustic panels in many schools, concert halls, auditoriums and yes, even in the MTS Centre.

A group of people representing the Souris District Arts Council, Parent Council, Band Boosters and Drama are all very concerned and willing to work towards this project.  There are many people in our community that find the acoustics in the gym horrible.  A survey taken with a Band Concert audience had an overwhelming response in favour of getting something done to improve the acoustics in the gymnasium.

Have you ever attended a presentation or performance in the last few years and found it difficult to hear things clearly?  When one struggles to hear with clarity, the result is usually that individuals will stop attending events.  Sad, when the acoustic problem could be fixed.

The School Board has given $2000.00 for this project.  A grant is being applied for as well.  A fundraising project has been initiated for the month of November ñ Fruit Sales of Navel California Oranges, Texas Red Grapefruit and four varieties of Apples.  Attached is an order form with all the information.  Last date to order is November 26th.

We hope everyone will support this much needed project so the acoustics can be improved soon.  If anyone would like to make a personal donation to this project the school division will issue tax receipts  (Cheques payable to Southwest Horizon School Division).  For any other information, please contact Glenda McConnell.  Thank you in advance for your support.
