NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

The month of September has come and gone.  Our school population at the end of September was 510 students.

We have been hearing rumors that we have H1N1 cases at Souris School.  We have NO CONFIRMED cases of H1N1 at Souris School.  We are tracking all student illness and reporting this to our Public Health Authority.  We have been reporting between 10 ñ 15 absences each day at our school. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at school.

Western Manitoba Youth Choir
Will perform at Souris School
October 17, 2009 ñ 7:30 p.m.

We need to billet sixty choir members on the evening of October 17th.  If you are able to billet a choir member, please contact Louise Lawson at 483-2693 or Souris School at 483-2161 and dial 0.

To end this weekís newsletter I would like to talk about bus ridership and noon hour lunch period.  Students have a right to ride the bus and to stay for lunch at school, but both of these rights can be removed if a student does not follow the rules in these two part of the school day.

If you have a school or community event, please email to sourisevents@gmail.com.  This will automatically get it on the Community calendar at the Town of Souris website.  This is a great opportunity to get your event advertised.

SICK CHILDREN
Notes to stay in at recess do not help a sick child to have a good and productive day.  If a child is ill, we would recommend that they remain at home where they can receive the proper care, and where they will not spread their illness to others.  Most times, if a child is too sick to go out for recess, they are too sick to be in school.  This has always been an important issue, but with the threat of H1N1 virus it is even more so.

A Wheels For Jordyn update from Souris School...
On September 18th Lars Peterson from Cargill grain in Nesbitt presented Souris School with a cheque for $2000 to go towards our Wheels For Jordyn campaign.  Jordyn Simonson has been using her new "Super chair for kids" wheelchair for 4 months now and it has been wonderful.  We are now able to purchase an adapted swing set for our playground so Jordyn can play at recess with her friends.

VOLLEYBALL

Varsity Girls
The Varsity Girls Volleyball team had another outstanding weekend last weekend in their tournament schedule.  The team traveled to Weyburn to participate in the 12 team tournament that featured teams from across Saskatchewan .  After a grueling 7 game round robin their record was 13 wins, 1 loss.  They defeated teams from Regina, Oxbow, Midale, Saskatoon, and Weyburn who are the reigning 5A provincial champions.  In the semis they defeated BGM from Saskatoon and again faced Weyburn in the final.  This time they came up short but were proud to bring home the 2nd place trophy.  The team appreciates all the family support they have received.
The Varsity Girls volleyball team opened their league schedule Monday night with a convincing win over Wawanesa..  The girls won 3 straight.

The girls travel to Roblin on Friday again in tournament action.  Good Luck Girls!

Varsity Boys

The Varsity Boys volleyball team has begun their season in excellent fashion.  This past weekend the boys won six of seven matches at the Brandon Bobcat tournament.  Brett Young and Sean Morrison were named to the tournament all-star team.

In league play on Thursday, the boys defeated Wawanesa in three straight games.  This weekend the team is in Roblin to play in the Goose Lake tournament.  This year's roster includes:  Luke Hill, Brett Young, Troy Chandler, Sean Morrison, Colby Suski, Terry Doull, Tanner Butler, Cameron Rowatt, Josh Murray, William Lagradilla, and is coached by Mike Kindle.

Junior Varsity Girls

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity Girls volleyball team on their 6th place finish at Massey last weekend.
