IN FLANDER'S FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flander's fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow
In Flander's fields.

Our school will again be taking part in
Operation Christmas Child. Families or groups
may fill shoeboxes with items for needy
children in Mexico and Central America. If
you would prefer to give one or two items, we
will gladly make up the boxes here at school.
You may wish to give $7.00 to aid in shipping
the boxes overseas. Last year, our community
sent about 200 boxes. Items to include are:
small, new toys, school supplies, hygiene items
such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, and
soap; hard, wrapped candy, sunglasses, T-
shirts, ball caps, hair clips, socks.
Your box may be marked Girl or Boy, and may
be for a 2-4 year old, a 5-9 year old, or a 10-
14 year old.
Please do not include any war toys, liquids,
playing cards, used items, or anything that will
melt in tropical heat.
Contributions are to be at the school by

bringing joy and hope to very needy children.

A Hero
All those bodies on the ground,
once were lost and now are found.
In the shade of a tree,
a family comes to see,
what remains of their son
and what he had done.
They kneel and say a prayer,
for what a hero lay there.
We remember and move on
for what seems lost, but is never gone.

SOURIS SCHOOL PARENT ADVISORY
COUNCIL
As you know, Parent/Teacher/Student
Conferences are fast approaching. Parent
Council, along with the school, is trying to
arrange childcare throughout the two
evenings, for siblings not involved in the
interview process. In order to make this
possible, we are in need of 4 parents who are
willing to volunteer one of the following
evenings: Wednesday, November 25th from
5:15pm ñ 8:45pm or Thursday or November
26th from 5:15pm ñ 8:15pm. If you have ever
used this service or plan to use it this year,
please consider volunteering your time on one
of these nights. Without the necessary
volunteers, we will not be able to offer this
service during November interviews.
Responsibilities would include: ensuring kids
are properly signed in and out; as well as
overseeing childcare to ensure the safety of
everyone involved. Feel free to volunteer on
the night that your child(renís) interviews are
scheduled for, as it is not necessary to be in
the gym for the entire time.
If you are available to volunteer, please call or
email me.

SCHOOL CURLING
There will be a change in the program this
year, which hopefully will accommodate more
curlers. The curling will begin Monday,
November 16th.
Mondays (except first Monday of every
month)
3:30 ñ 4:00 ñ grades K-2 students
4:00 ñ 4:45 ñ grades 3-5 students
Tuesdays, 3:3O ñ 4:30
Open to all students above grade 5.
Fees:
Grades K-5 - $25 per curler
Grades 6-12 - $35 per curler
This is open to students whether they are
beginner or have curled before. All
participants must have clean runners and wear
pants that will stretch. Please note that all K-
2 curlers will be required to have a helmet. A
bike helmet would be fine. Older curlers may
also do so as well. This is a good idea
especially for new curlers.
We are very short of supervisors, so if any
parents or grandparents are able to help, it
would be greatly appreciated.
For further details contact Karen Dunbar at
483-3534. Seeing you on the 16th and 17th.

Acoustic Panel Project
When the gym renovation was completed about
five years ago, there was never a replacement
of acoustic panels put on the walls. This has
resulted in a facility for school & community
performances, presentations and events to be
very loud and echoey (bare cinder block walls
and metal ceiling). This makes it very difficult
for any audience to hear properly.
Some research has been done and an acoustic
specialist came in to analyze and assess the
need for proper acoustic considerations. The
reverberation rate calculated out to be 5.29
seconds. The acceptable range is 1.20 ñ 1.75
seconds. Last June he quoted a cost of about
$10,000 - $12,000 to bring the facility up to
an acceptable standard. This company from
Winnipeg has installed these acoustic panels in
many schools, concert halls, auditoriums and
yes, even in the MTS Centre.
A group of people representing the Souris
District Arts Council, Parent Council, Band
Boosters and Drama are all very concerned
and willing to work towards this project.
There are many people in our community that
find the acoustics in the gym horrible. A
survey taken with a Band Concert audience had
an overwhelming response in favour of getting
something done to improve the acoustics in
the gymnasium.
Have you ever attended a presentation or
performance in the last few years and found it
difficult to hear things clearly? When one
struggles to hear with clarity, the result is
usually that individuals will stop attending
events. Sad, when the acoustic problem could
be fixed.
The School Board has given $2000.00 for this
project. A grant is being applied for as well.
A fundraising project has been initiated for
the month of November ñ Fruit Sales of Navel
California Oranges, Texas Red Grapefruit and
four varieties of Apples. Attached is an order
form with all the information. Last date to
order is November 26th.
We hope everyone will support this much
needed project so the acoustics can be
improved soon. If anyone would like to make a
personal donation to this project the school
division will issue tax receipts (Cheques
payable to Southwest Horizon School
Division). For any other information, please
contact Glenda McConnell. Thank you in
advance for your support.
