NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
We, the Administration Team at Souris
School, would like to thank Mrs. McConnell for
her leadership and dedication to the sound
proofing project of our Gym. As you may be
aware, it will cost about $12,000.00 to get our
Gym sound proofed. Mrs. McConnell has
organized a fruit sale with proceeds going
towards these renovations in our gym. Thank
you for all of your hard work.
We will be watching scores the next few days
as our Varsity Girls and Boys Volleyball Teams
are at Provincials in Lac du Bonnett. We wish
them all the best. Go Sabres.
We hope that you found
Parent/Guardian/Interviews to be useful and
insightful into how your child is progressing in
their present grade. We realize that
communication is the key to student success,
that is why we believe that studentís progress
needs to be an ongoing process and not just
done at Parent/Guardian/Interview time. At
any time, if you have questions or concerns,
please contact your childís teacher and make
arrangements to get your questions answered.
As we near the end of November, here is some
information for Parent-Teacher interviews.
Our Varsity Girls and Boys Volleyball Teams
are going to Provincials. The dates of
Provincials fall at the same time as Parent-
Teacher interviews. Mr. Kindle, Mrs. Popple
and Mrs. Young will be away both Wednesday
and Thursday evening. If you require an
interview with these people, please make
arrangements before or after interview dates,
and they will be happy to accommodate your
requests. Mrs. Popple sent a letter home with
her students. Parents, if you have not
received it, please check with your student.
We would like to end this weekís newsletter
with a letter that went home this week with
the youngest in the family K-5. This letter
explains the rational for the changes made to
our December Activities.
November 23rd, 2009
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This letter is to better inform you of the
rationale behind recent decisions that
resulted in the Early Years Christmas Concert
and Grade 5 Musical being changed to non-
Christmas events.
The rationale for making these changes was:
1) to better align our programming with
the Appropriate Education Act from the
provincial government which expressly
forbids children being excluded from
learning activities due to religion.
2) to not contravene the Human Rights
Act.
3) to ensure that every child is included in
every opportunity to achieve all the
learning outcomes as prescribed by
Education Manitoba and offered by our
school.
This move was not designed to take anything
away from anyone but to ensure the complete
and full education of all our students. It was
not brought about by any demands from any
individual or group. It was an educational
decision made by the administration of Souris
School with much input from staff, the advice
and guidance of our superintendent, the
complete support of our three local trustees,
and with the goal of including every one of the
precious children entrusted to our care. Please
feel free to call any of the three school
administrators for further information or
clarification.
Yours in education,
Robert Young, Leanne Rolfe, Glenn Wallmann

THE SOURIS/GLENWOOD CHAMBER of
COMMERCE
is again sponsoring SANTAíS WORKSHOP
WHEN: Thursday December 3th, 2009
WHERE: Souris Friendship Centre (Formally
the Drop In) Crescent Avenue, Souris
TIME: 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
COST: $10.00 per gift, there is no limit on the
number of gifts each child can purchase. ie:
Mum, Dad, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa,
special friend.
For those of you unfamiliar with Santaís
Workshop I will try to explain. Local
merchants will bring in gifts suitable for
children & adults which have a value of $10.00
plus, which they are willing to sell to the
children for $10.00 tax included. An adult will
meet your child and collect the appropriate
money, give your child a coupon(s) to purchase
gift(s).
If you desire, an adult will accompany your
child to assist in choosing a suitable gift.
The child will then proceed into the room
where the gifts are displayed, they will hand
in their coupon, receive their chosen gift then
proceed to a table where several volunteers
will be on hand to assist in wrapping and
labeling the chosen gift(s). The parents(s),
guardian(s) are not allowed in the gift room.
They can either stay & visit or go shop for a
period of time. We have been doing this for
several years as it has proven to be very
popular with children & adults. If you have any
further questions donít hesitate to call
