NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
We had a very successful Post-Secondary Day
on Monday. We had about eighteen different
colleges and universities in attendance. Our
grade 11 and 12 students had an opportunity to
spend time and ask questions with at least two
different schools. Mrs. Delaurier did an
excellent job of organizing the day and the
Student Leadership team did a great job of
making sure everyone got to the right place.
We would like to thank our local Legion
members and veterans for attending our
Remembrance Day Service this week. Our
guest speaker Peter Cottingham did an
excellent job. Mr. Cottingham also spent the
afternoon talking to our students in several
classes about his thoughts and experiences
during World War II.
Just a reminder that report cards will be
coming home on November 18th.
As always, if you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to call me directly
at 483-6230. Have a great weekend and we
will see you on Monday.

SCHOOL CURLING
There will be a change in the program this
year, which hopefully will accommodate more
curlers. The curling will begin Monday,
November 16th.
Mondays (except first Monday of every
month)
3:30 ñ 4:00 ñ grades K-2 students
4:00 ñ 4:45 ñ grades 3-5 students
Tuesdays, 3:3O ñ 4:30
Open to all students above grade 5.
Fees:
Grades K-5 - $25 per curler
Grades 6-12 - $35 per curler
This is open to students whether they are
beginner or have curled before. All
participants must have clean runners and wear
pants that will stretch. Please note that all K-
2 curlers will be required to have a helmet. A
bike helmet would be fine. Older curlers may
also do so as well. This is a good idea
especially for new curlers.
We are very short of supervisors, so if any
parents or grandparents are able to help, it
would be greatly appreciated.
For further details contact Karen Dunbar at
483-3534. See you on the 16th and 17th.
VOLLEYBALL
Varsity Boys
Last weekend, at Elton Collegiate, the Varsity
Boys came out as runners-up. This is the third
tournament they left with the same results.
After defeating Elton, Rivers, MCA Gretna
and Neepawa twice, the boys advanced to the
final. There they met Major Pratt and lost
with cores of 25-23, 20-25, 11-15.
On Monday the boys won the provincial playoff
tournament. They went undefeated in the
round robin, beating Wawanesa, Virden,
Reston and Boissevain. In the final they
defeated Boissevain 2-0 in an exciting match.
They advance to provincials in Neepawa
November 20th and 21st.
Last night the boys defeated Killarney in
three straight sets to earn the opportunity to
represent our zone at provincials. Way to go
guys!
ïMr. Mike Kindle

Middle Years Grade 8 Volleyball
This volleyball season has gotten off to a good
start. The grade 8 team has entered the
Brandon league and is doing well. As the girls
progress through the season, their skill level
and confidence has drastically improved! On
Monday the girls travelled to Deloraine for a
Zone 16 team tournament. The girls finished
first in their pool defeating Virden, Deloraine
1 and Pierson. They went on to the semi-finals
to play Killarney and won in a tightly played
match. In the finals the girls met Deloraine 2.
They played a great game but ended up
losing to a more experienced team. All in all it
the girls played consistently well all day and
should be proud of their accomplishment.
Team members: Bailey Radcliffe, Sarah Palson,
Alissa Swaenepoel, Stacey Sherritt, Emma
Boisvert, Emma Weadge, Kyla Harding, Gina
Williams, Cassie Rekken, Hannah Cooke, Jessie
Robbins.

Acoustic Panel Project
When the gym renovation was completed about
five years ago, there was never a replacement
of acoustic panels put on the walls. This has
resulted in a facility for school & community
performances, presentations and events to be
very loud and echoey (bare cinder block walls
and metal ceiling). This makes it very difficult
for any audience to hear properly.
Some research has been done and an acoustic
specialist came in to analyze and assess the
need for proper acoustic considerations. The
reverberation rate calculated out to be 5.29
seconds. The acceptable range is 1.20 ñ 1.75
seconds. Last June he quoted a cost of about
$10,000 - $12,000 to bring the facility up to
an acceptable standard. This company from
Winnipeg has installed these acoustic panels in
many schools, concert halls, auditoriums and
yes, even in the MTS Centre.
A group of people representing the Souris
District Arts Council, Parent Council, Band
Boosters and Drama are all very concerned
and willing to work towards this project.
There are many people in our community that
find the acoustics in the gym horrible. A
survey taken with a Band Concert audience had
an overwhelming response in favour of getting
something done to improve the acoustics in
the gymnasium.
Have you ever attended a presentation or
performance in the last few years and found it
difficult to hear things clearly? When one
struggles to hear with clarity, the result is
usually that individuals will stop attending
events. Sad, when the acoustic problem could
be fixed.
The School Board has given $2000.00 for this
project. A grant is being applied for as well.
A fundraising project has been initiated for
the month of November ñ Fruit Sales of Navel
California Oranges, Texas Red Grapefruit and
four varieties of Apples. Attached is an order
form with all the information. Last date to
order is November 26th.
We hope everyone will support this much
needed project so the acoustics can be
improved soon. If anyone would like to make a
personal donation to this project the school
division will issue tax receipts (Cheques
payable to Southwest Horizon School
Division). For any other information, please
contact Glenda McConnell. Thank you in
advance for your support.
