NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
The end of January has arrived and Grade 9-
12 students are in full swing writing exams.  
Just a reminder that exam week runs from
January 29 ñ February 4th.  Friday, February
5th is a PD Day.  There will be No Classes for
K-12.
 
We had another school closure day this month.
Just a reminder to listen to our local radio
stations and check the Souris School web site.  
Bus students will be contacted by drivers,
please ensure that your driver has your mobile
cell numbers if you cannot be reached on your
land-line.
 
Order forms will be going out on February 8th
if you are interested in ordering ëSabreí school
wear.   Prices will be in next weekís newsletter
along with the logo design.
 
The new semester begins on February 8th.

SOURIS SCHOOL WEB SITE
There is a new box added to the Souris School
Web Site.  It will be updated by 7:00 a.m. if
the school is closed due to inclement weather.  
We realize there was some confusion on CKLQ
when school was closed on Monday, January
25th.  Hopefully, if there is another closure,
this will be another avenue to check to see the
status of the school.
 
BAND NEWS
On Friday, January 22nd, Dr. Wendy McCallum
from Brandon University work with band
students in grades 8-12.  Aside from working
on individual music pieces, she also worked
with students on proper posture, breathing
techniques, tone quality and class performance
fundamentals.
 
Grade 8 and 9 band students will be attending
and performing at the Winnipeg Optimist
Festival on February 24th and 25th.  
Chaperones are still required for this event.  
Please contact the office or Mr. Cwir if you
are available to chaperone.
 
A full scholarship for one week at
International Music Camp in 2010 (value $345
USD) will be awarded on February 10.~~To
enter go to the IMC website after Thursday,
January 28th and click on "Sign Up" at the top
of the homepage.~~It's that easy!~~One
entry per person.~~Anyone can sign up--
students, parents, grandparents, friends,
teachers, etc.~~After signing up, you will be
kept posted on all kinds of exciting things
happening at IMC.~~The winner will be
selected from all who have registered on the
website by 11:59 PM on February 10, 2010.
~The scholarship winner will be announced on
February 15.~~Come back for more contests
as summer approaches!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
The school is now accepting registration for
Kindergarten students for the 2009-2010
school year.  Parents who have children of
Kindergarten age are asked to register these
children with the school secretary between
8:00 a.m. ñ 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday at the
school office.  Parents are asked to bring
their childís birth certificate when they come
to register.  Children must be five years of
age on or before December 31st, 2010.  Anyone
who is aware of neighbors and friends who
may have children ready to begin Kindergarten
in the fall are asked to pass the message on to
them to assist with our school planning.

$$$ TO HELP WITH HAITI RELIEF
Today is the last day we are collecting blue
jean money to donate to Haiti.  Last week we
collected $245.20.  Next week we will report
what Souris School staff and students
collected in total.  Thank you to everyone who
has donated to this worthwhile project.
 
 
 
VOICE LESSONS
Explore your voice with me!  I am now
accepting beginner level singers for voice
lessons.  Lessons will take place after school in
the Souris school band room.  Call Julie at
741-0102 for more information.
 
BOARD GAME NIGHT
Forbidden Flavours is looking to host some
Board Game nights at Forbidden Flavours
(OOPS! We advertised Souris School by
mistake!)  If you have any board games you
are no longer using and would like to donate,
please drop them off at Forbidden Flavours.  
We will let you know if enough interest is
shown and when the game nights will be.

MICROWAVE DUTY
Please arrive at the school at 11:45 a.m.  
Parents you will have to use the main office
doors as all other doors will be locked. You can
go to Room 7 in the Early Year's end.  The
microwaves are stored on a cart in this room.  
Someone could be taking a lesson, so PLEASE
enter quietly.  The instructions are on the side
of the top microwave.  The monthly calendar is
on the top.

CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS
February will be a very busy month.  Students
have now received their individualized
timetables for Semester 2.  Please come and
see me if you would like to make any changes.   
Students have two weeks to do so.  Parents,
please feel free to call me if you have any
questions.
 
On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the University of
Regina is planning a visit to our school.  A
presentation is available to students who are
interested in learning more about post
secondary institutions and scholarships that
go with the application process. On Thursday,
Feb.11th a representative from Manitoba
Transportation and Government Services will
be at our school at 9:30 a.m.  He will be
speaking to Grade 11 students on careers in
this government field, as well as potential
summer employment opportunities. Their
Grade 11 student summer salary range is
$14.67 per hour.  
  
There are many scholarships available to the
Grade 12 students right now.  Now is the time
to be submitting your applications and
checking your institutionís scholarship
requirements.  Please see me for further
information.

BASKETBALL
Varsity Boys
In Varsity Boys Basketball action Wednesday
night they hosted Sioux Valley and won 73-36.  
Everyone contributed to the game.  It was a
great team effort.  Top scorers were:  Will
Lagradilla 22 points, Chris Gohl 17 points, Calin
Carr 11 points, Ken May 8 points.

Washing of hands and face before coming to
school helps stop the spread of germs as well

Just a reminder that the area designated as
handicapped parking in front of the Early
Years main doors is reserved for parents of
children with special needs.  Please do not park
