FAMILY LITERACY DAY
Did you know that January 27th is Family
Literacy Day? Literacy is more than books.
There are several ways to keep your literacy
skills sharp ñ all it takes is practicing for 15
minutes every day. Reading, writing, playing a
game, following a recipe, or even singing a song
all help prepare children for challenges ahead
and sharpen skills for adults. Visit
activities.
DRIVERS ED
There is a Driverís Ed sign up sheet in the
office. Doug Hastie is hoping to start a new
class on Sunday, February 14th. Students have
to be 15 on or before November 28, 2009.

$$$ TO HELP WITH HAITI RELIEF
Mrs. Patti Kirkwood, one of our educational
assistants at Souris School, has challenged
the staff and students to raise money to help
the earthquake victims in Haiti.
As Friday is Bluejean Day at Souris School
(this is the one day of the week when staff
can wear bluejeans and they pay $1.00 to do
this. This money is put in a fund to be
distributed in June to students who apply for
help to go to camp etc.). Mrs. Kirkwood is
challenging all staff to also put in $1.00 in the
jar in the office, along with the $1.00 they
pay to the school fund.
Mrs. Kirkwood is also challenging students who
wear bluejeans on Friday to donate a dollar to
the cause.
Thank you in advance for your help in this
matter. We have so much here and they need
so much help in Haiti.
Update ñ last Friday we collected $458.83.
The government matched our $458.83 so it
turned into $917.66 Way to go staff and
students. Thank you for your generosity.
VOICE LESSONS
Explore your voice with me! I am now
accepting beginner level singers for voice

SOURIS SCHOOL PARENT ADVISORY
COUNCIL
SSPAC Meeting
Monday January 18, 2010
SSPAC regular meeting was called to order
Monday January 18, 2010 at 7:10 pm.
Present: Shelley Elliott, Phil Dornian, Bob
Young, Brenda Swaenepoel, Glenn Wallmann,
Henry Maryniuk, Rick Pettinger, Bonnie
Radcliffe, Jaycee Thexton, Mary Lovatt, Lisa
Edmunds.
Regrets: Jackie Kirkup, Lara Bossert, Cheryl
Roberts.
Rick moved, Mary seconded adoption of the
agenda.
Secretary's Report: Henry moved, Brenda
seconded to adopt the minutes from the last
meetings held Monday, November 16, 2009
and Tuesday, December 8, 2009.
Jaycee has received communication from Carol
Ross Harms, regarding the Arts Council grant
application to the Manitoba Community
Services Council Inc. for funding toward the
acoustic panel project in the gym. Further
information is required from PAC for the
application and this will be done by Heather
and Jaycee and mailed into MCSC.
Treasurer's Report: Deferred.
Principal's Report: Student Safety-Policies
and Procedures are created under the "Safe
School Legislationî. Twice a year safety drills
are done with students so they know what to
do in case of an emergency. They also discuss
safety issues with students from time to time
at hallway huddles. When students are absent
from school and there is no notification from
parents as to why, the classroom teacher will
contact the office and the office will contact
the home. This is usually done before 9:15
am. However, if a student went home ill the
day before or if the student did not get on
the bus, the school assumes the parents are
aware their child is not at school. Glenn will
bring this matter up at the next EY staff
meeting to ensure all teachers are contacting
the office when there is an unexplained
absence in their classroom.
Feedback on the Early Years Winter Concert
and the Christmas celebration held on the last
day of school in December was presented.
Several people have expressed they felt the
concert was enjoyable and others stated they
observed audience attendance was down and
that the atmosphere in the audience was
tense. As per a count done at the door the
attendance was approximately the same as
other years. Some felt the variety of musical
selections was limited.
There is consensus with the grade 5 musical
being held in February, the date to be
announced, and tentatively will be an evening
performance.
February 8, 2010 order forms for school wear
will be sent home with students to be
returned by Friday, February 12th. The
school colors of Royal Blue and Black will be
used and March 25th is the anticipated date
of completion.
The school will be looking at revising its
mission statement. It and the school
division's mission statements will be presented
at the next PAC meeting, which will also be
the AGM Monday, March 15, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.
The recent school closure (January 8th ) was
not on the school website because at that time
there were only 2 individuals that had access
to the school website and neither of them
were at the school that morning and they
couldn't access the website from their mobile
devises. There are now several individuals who
have been given access to the website to
ensure this doesn't happen again. Seven of
the school bus drivers had difficulty
contacting parents regarding the school
closure because they were not available at
their land line phone numbers. Please be sure
your bus driver has all your contact
numbers.
Business Arising: The staff appreciation
breakfast will be held Wednesday, February
10, 2010. The bakery order has been
completed. This year's theme will be pirates.
Shelley and Lisa volunteered to handle the
decorations and the set up the night before
and Jaycee volunteered to do the serving and
clean-up the morning of the breakfast.
Shelley will contact parents who offered to
help with this event. Jaycee requested 3 - 4
more people to help the morning of.
Kim Eissner, Jackie Kirkup and Jaycee
Thexton formed a Nomination Committee for
MBís Celebration of Excellence in Teaching
Awards. Brian Elder (Middle Years teacher)
has been nominated for an Excellence Award
in Teaching. Vivian Thomson, Susan Hicks and
Barb Falloon have been nominated for the
Collaboration Award. We congratulate these
teachers and wish them the best of luck!
New Business: Each year posters are placed
in various places in Souris with information
regarding early kindergarten registration.
Lisa will ensure these posters go up again this
year. She will contact Cheryl regarding
posters previously used. Information should
also be placed on the town website and it was
suggested that the kindergarten application
forms could be made available online.
SSPAC will plan to welcome the new
Superintendent for Southwest Horizon School
Division, possibly during the back to school
barbecue to be held the first day of school in
September 2010.
Tentative dates for this year's Family Fun
Night are April 12th or 19th which are both
Mondays. Rhonda Young and her students
have again offered to help. Jaycee will
contact the school to book the gym and will be
in touch with Rhonda as well. Thank you
Rhonda and students! Further details will be
announced as they become available. We will
be looking for donations of gently used items
for the fishing pond again this year, so hold
onto items you wish to donate, we will let you
know when we have an area to store them, so
you can drop them off.
Volunteers will be needed to assist with props,
costumes, setting up the stage, make up and
taking down chairs for the upcoming Senior
Years production: ìThe Beverly Hillbilliesî.
Dates of the production are May 6, 7, and 8th,
with the Dinner Theatre on the 8th. You do
not need to have a child in SY in order to help
out. If wishing to volunteer please forward
your name to Brenda Swaenepoel or email
Jaycee ( PAC ).
This year the Parent Council executive has
been focusing some of its attention on how
PAC communicates with the school and with
parents. We feel there is room for
improvement in both of these areas. Some
obstacles and possible solutions were
discussed. Members of the PAC executive plan
to meet with members of the administration
team on a more regular basis in 2010 in an
effort to improve communication on that end.
We are encouraging more parents to become
involved with PAC, which we feel will assist in
improved communication as well.
Rick let PAC know that the board would be
looking at how the changes to the Christmas
Concert were handled. His understanding is
that there is less of a concern about the
changes that took place with the Early Years
Christmas Concert and Grade 5 Musical but
rather the manner in which the changes took
place.
Comment, compliment or pass: Henry
expressed he feels PAC meetings are handled
well. Bonnie said she is pleased to see more
people attending PAC meetings. Bonnie
thanked Brenda for the information given
clarifying the program at the Remembrance
Day Service, held last November. Thank you
to Board members who support PAC by
attending meetings.
Meeting adjourned by Shelley.

BASKETBALL
The Varsity Girls traveled to Treherne for
tournament action last weekend. The girls
played outstanding in their first game
defeating Dufferin Christian 74-41. Sarah
White had a season high 28 points to lead the
team while Brynna Walker added 14. The
semifinal was a bit of a struggle for a while
until the ladies tightened up defensively.
They pulled away in the second half to beat
Elm Creek 55-27. Brynna scored 19 while
Danica Swaenepoel and Sarah added 10 points
each. This set up a rematch of last years'
final with the host Tigers. The first quarter
was tight all the way and saw our team trailing
by only one point. However, the next two
quarters belonged to the Tigers as they
outscored the ladies 23-11. The Sabres
fought back to make it close late, but fell 46-
36. Brynna hooped 10 points and Candace
Draper added 8. Danica and Brynna were
named to the tournament Allstar Team.
The team played in Thursday in Boissevain
versus the number one ranked Broncos. A slow
start to the game hurt as the girls trailed 11-1
at one point, but rallied to close within 3
points in the second half. Turnovers were the
story of the game, as the ladies had trouble
taking care of the ball. Their hard work and
determination continued the entire game
before falling 60-44. Brynna Walker scored
17 points for the Sabres. ïCoach P
Varsity Boys
The Varsity boys Basketball Team defeated
Boissevain last night with a score of 69 to 53.
It was a great team effort. Top rebounders
for the team were Bruce Swaenepoel, Ken May
and Will Lagradilla. Top scorers were Chris
Gohl with 40 points, Will Lagradilla with 14
points, Ken May and Brett Miner each added 7
points. Great job boys!
ïCoach Gohl
Junior Varsity Girls
The JV Girls were out of town twice this
week. In Wawanesa they handed the Warriors
a 60 ñ 11 loss. Morgan Husband put up 28
points, Sarah McKenna added 16 points and
Stephanie, Jessica and Nicole chipped in with
4 each.
Last night in Boissevain the girls lost to the
Broncos 54 ñ 32. Morgan put up 13 points
Allison McKinnon added 7 and Sarah chipped in
with 6.
