Delivery Modes:
Online courses are delivered via the Internet. Course material is available online and generally includes a variety of text, audio and video files. Learners communicate with the instructor and other classmates via Interactive television, Moodle, email, chat groups or other tools on the Web. Learners can use a computer in any location as long as it can access the Internet.
There are two types of online courses:
Asynchronous
With an asynchronous course, learners login to the course with their username and password, at their convenience. Course materials are available online. Learners send messages to a central location, like a discussion forum, where they are answered by the instructor and other learners. Email is an example of asynchronous communication. Asynchronous courses are time and place independent.
Synchronous
With a synchronous course, learners login at a a specified time. Communications are received from the instructor and other learners in real-time, that is, as soon as the messages are sent, and can be responded to immediately. Synchronous courses are time dependent and place independent. Minimum or specific hardware and software requirements are indicated by each delivery institution/agency. Some courses may require a sound card, microphone and speakers, headset, or web camera, while others will require CD or DVD capabilities. Please confirm specific requirements with the delivery institution prior to registration.
