Maintenance of Buses

Maintenance Duties of School Bus Drivers
Every school bus shall be kept clean and sanitary at all times and shall be at all times subject to inspection as hereinafter provided.

Cleanliness
Buses must be swept clean inside and dusted daily.  Outside lights, reflectors, and lettering must be clearly visible at the start or each run, front and back.  Buses must be washed when needed.  This is the driver's responsibility.

Servicing of Buses
Arrangements are to be made with the Division Head Mechanics for servicing every 3,000 - 5,000 kilometers.

Safety Equipment
Drivers must be satisfied that flares, first aide kits, and fire extinguishers are properly maintained and ready for emergency use at all times.

Bus Equipment, Signs & Regulations
All buses are to be equipped with the following: axe, first aide kit, fire extinguisher, safety flares, broom, dusting tool, passenger regulation sign, inspection certificate, license, registration, and student listing and route map.

Bus Breakdown
The driver shall park the school bus off the main road when it is not being used for conveying children.  When a school bus is disabled, markers, flags, and/or flares shall be properly set out to indicate the road hazard in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act.  Such markers must be placed at least 200 feet (60 metres) in front and behind the bus.

Emergency Breakdown
Parents requested to transport their own children to school due to bus breakdown will receive $5.00 per trip to and from the school if requested.
